This study is to find out what the fruit was that Adam and Eve ate in the garden of Eden.
Gen 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
These trees were good for food, and pleasant to the sight, and along with them was the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
1John 1:1 That which was from the beginning which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us.)
1John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our’s only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
Keeping his word, his commandments, gives us eternal life. We know him, when we keep his commandments, but if we do not keep his word, we are considered to be a liar, without the truth.
Gen. 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
He was given a choice, he could either believe what God told him and obey it, or he could disobey God’s commandment.
Gen. 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make on wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
The serpent caused Eve to question what God told them, tempting her with what he made her believe, that God was holding back from them. He made it look good to her, that she would be like God if she ate. But the result of eating the fruit was shame and fear. That is not the kind of fruit they were led to believe it was, but then it was too late. He tempted her with knowledge. You have the tree of knowledge of good an evil and the tree of life. So, let’s take a look at what the bible calls knowledge.
Prov. 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Verse 10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
If Eve had feared God, she would not have disobeyed. No inticing of the serpent, would have turned her heart away from God’s commandment. God’s knowledge leads to life. The serpent”s knowledge leads to death.
Verse 20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: 21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the opening of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, 22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? 23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. 24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh, When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you, 28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devises.
This sounds just like what happened in the garden of Eden. God gave them a commandment to follow, but they chose to disobey God, and obey the serpent instead. So they indeed, ended up eating the fruits of their own doing. which got them thrown out of the garden. What they chose as knowledge,, was not the knowledge they thought it was.
Is. 44:24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself; 25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;
When you compare the knowledge of man with the knowledge that comes from obeying the word of God, there is just no comparison. God’s knowledge leads to life. The serpent’s knowledge leads to death.
Is. 47:10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou has said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.
Here we find that there is wisdom and knowledge that perverts.
Prov. 3:1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: 2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. 3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee; bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: 4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart: and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. 9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: 10 So shall thy barns be fiilled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. 11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: 12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. 13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merechandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. 16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. 19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. 20 By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds down the dew. 21 My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: 22 So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
Verse 33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
Again, in these scriptures, he tells us to forget not my law, keep the commandments, and doing so will add length of days, long life, and peace. We are to bind mercy and truth about our neck, and write them upon the table of our hearts, and in so doing, we find favor and good understanding. We are to trust in the LORD, and not on our own understanding.
In verse 13 the result of finding the Lord’s wisdom, and understanding, is that we will be happy, and find the tree of life. It is not just knowledge, but it is his knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. Sound wisdom and discretion are life unto thy soul. But along with this we see the curse that goes along with the wicked, just like when Adam and Eve ate of the fruit they were commanded not to eat, the result was the ground was cursed.
Ps. 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD: and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season: his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
We are to bear fruit for him.
Ps. 55:1 Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication. 2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise; 3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me. 4 My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. 5 Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. 6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! For then would I fly away, and be at rest. 7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah. 8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest. 9 Destroy, O LORD, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city. 10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it. 11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.
When wickedness is in the midst, people mourn, because of the voice of the enemy, and because of the oppression of the wicked. You see wrath, hatred, fearfulness, and trembling. Iniquity is present, and it pains the heart to see it, but the worst is the terrors of death. Along with this is windy storm and tempest, violence, and strife, and when wickedness is in the midst, so also is mischief and sorrow.
Just like in the garden of Eden, in the midst was the voice of the serpent telling them lies, and because of their willingness to believe and obey him, the rest came automatically. The choice was not just which fruit to eat, but which voice to listen to. If they had obeyed the voice of God, they would have never had to leave the garden.
Prov. 11:1 A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight. Verse 3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. 4 Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death. 5 The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness. 6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.
Verse 9 An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
Verse 11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
Verse 19 As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.
Verse 21 Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered. Verse 23 The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.
Verse 27 He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him. 28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.
Verse 30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. 31 Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.
Let me repeat verse 30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
There was righteousness that sprung up in the garden, and also perverseness. They made a choice which one to eat from, and it was the fruit of perverseness, the lie of the serpent, instead of the truth of God.
